City directories list him as president of G. L. Rugo and Sons, Inc. after his father left the business around 1961; in 1964 his brother Robert is listed as president.

Joseph F. Rugo , a contractor in Boston for more than 20 years, died of cancer Sunday at New England Memorial Hosptial in Stoneham after a long illness. He was 63.

He had been an estimator for his father's company, G.L. Rugo & Sons, Inc., early in his career and later became president of the company, which built a number of churches in the Boston area. He had been with his father's firm from 1946 until 1965.

He later became an estimator and project manager for several other contracting companies in the Boston area before joining the Development Corporation of America.

Before retiring last July, Mr. Rugo also had been with the John B. Cruz Construction Co. Inc. of Mattapan, also as an estimator and project manager.

Born in Boston, Mr. Rugo was graduated from Milton High School in 1939 and from Duke University in Durham, N.C., in 1943.

In World War II, he was a US Navy lieutenant, serving from 1943 until 1946.

He leaves his wife, Carmela (Bonarrigo) of Stoneham; three sons, Robert of Boston, Thomas Rugo of Londonderry, N.H., and Joseph P. Rugo of Parsipanny, N.J.; a daughter, Diane Phillips of Durham, N.C.; his parents, Guido and Beatrice (McHugh) of Boston; four brothers, Robert of Natick, Richard of Brookline, Lawrence of Marblehead and Paul of Newton; and four grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be said in St. Eulalia's Church Winchester at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
