Rugo Given Separate Hearing for Battery, Assault Charge Friday
Paul Rugo '55 yesterday won his fight for a separate preliminary hearing on whether a complaint should be issued against him on a charge of assault and battery.
Rugo's attorney, Edward A. Counihan III, said that the hearing is set for this Friday morning in the clerk's office of the East Cambridge District Court.
The complainant against Rugo is patrolman William Story, one of the four officers who helped put Rugo in the patrol wagon when he was arrested during the riot. Story said the student, who was with a date at the time, violently resisted arrest.

Paul Richard Rugo , a partner in the law firm of Goodwin, Procter & Hoar in Boston, died Saturday at his home in North Hampton, N.H., after a battle with cancer. He was 59 and had been a longtime resident of Newton before moving to New Hampshire recently.
In 1966, Mr. Rugo joined Goodwin, Procter & Hoar, where he practiced primarily in the corporate and securities law areas. He served as general counsel to Batterymarch Financial Management; Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos; Codex Corp.; Instron Corp.; Crimson Travel/Thomas Cook; Vicor Corp.; and Watts Industries Inc.
He also advised a variety of other companies, such as Brown Brothers Harriman and Co., The Dolben Co. and General Cinema Corp.
His practice included extensive involvement in the privatization of the Soviet defense industry through joint stock company arrangements between Soviet enterprises and leading US and European global investors, as well as the development of investment structures for financial services companies in a number of emerging markets in South America and China.
Born in Milton, Mr. Rugo graduated from Milton Academy in 1951. He earned his bachelor's degree cum laude in English literature at Harvard College in 1955. While at Harvard, he was a member of the Owl Club and the Hasty Pudding Club. In 1958, he graduated from Harvard Law School, where he was a member of Lincoln's Inn.
Mr. Rugo was a trustee of Batterymarch Financial Management, the Sunburst Foundation and the Harid Conservatory of Music. He also served as a director of Vicor Corp. and Instron Corp. A member of the Massachusetts and Boston Bar Associations, he is listed in The Best Lawyers In America.
He was a member of The Country Club in Brookline and the Marshall Street Historical Society.
Mr. Rugo leaves his wife, Marieve; a son, Paul Michael; two daughters, Vanessa and Olivia; a brother, Lawrence of Marblehead; and his good friend, Ariadne Clifton of North Hampton, N.H.
Funeral services will be private. A memorial service will be held in Memorial Church at Harvard University May 20 at 4 p.m., followed by a reception at 17 Quincy St.
