“BRAINTREE -- State-hired technicians walked through the quiet streets between Mattulina Park and Pearl Street last week, taking soil samples and, in the process, adding another chapter to the debate over how to tackle the oil contamination that taints the neighborhood.
It was the most recent development in an effort to determine the extent of contamination in an area cited in 1987 as having oil-tainted soil beneath at least 14 homes.
State environmental authorities acknowledge the need for a limited cleanup, but their most recent efforts have become ensnared in a feud between two factions in the community who have differing views on the scale of the problem and how to fix it.
One group of residents says that a state cleanup proposal does not go far enough, while another group says the oil should be left alone and that the uproar is unwarranted....Marge Varnerin, 59, of Stevens Avenue, said, "It would be an inconvenience, but it's better than living with this stuff in the neighborhood."
