Listed as residing on Townsend Street, Jan 1940.

1944 directory lists her as a physician; still at 47 Townsend Street.

1945 directory for Taunton shows her as a physician at 473 Bay Street. In 1949 at 82 Broadway.

October 1973 - Dr. Emma Varnerin of Chestnut Hill won a new Cadillac and $1,500 in the Massachusetts Lottery.

Dr. Emma M. Varnerin , a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation for the Veterans Administration, died Sunday in the Recuperative Center in Roslindale. She was 88.

Dr. Varnerin , who had been living in Brookline, was born in Boston and educated at Boston University, where she received her bachelor's and medical degrees.

In her long career, Dr. Varnerin was physician for the blood bank center of the American Red Cross; assistant health officer of the division of communicable diseases for the commonwealth of Massachusetts; and in private practice in Taunton.

In 1952, Dr. Varnerin joined the Veterans Administration in Bath, N.Y., and later moved to Wood, Wis. She was then transferred to Sepulveda, Calif., where she was chief of rehabilitative services.

In 1955, she left the Veterans Administration to become assistant director of Gonzales Warm Springs Crippled Children's Foundation in Texas.

She returned to the VA in 1956, serving in Albany, N.Y., and then in Togus, Maine.

Besides directing therapy and rehabilitation, Dr. Varnerin also worked for many years on devices to help patients conduct their own rehabilitation.

She is survived by one nephew, Donald S. of Boston; one niece, Marcia of Braintree; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Infant Jesus Church in Brookline. Burial will be in New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan.
