Notes for Leonardo Feroli
Headstone spells family name “Feroli.” although Friuli Archives show Ferroli.

Reported that he came to the US with Giacomo (John) and Luigi (Louis) Varnerin, possibly in 1885. They walked from New York to Dorchester, chopping wood and doing odd jobs along the way. His son John Feroli married Maria Varnerin, the daughter of John Varnerin.

Possibly arriving in New York with Giacomo Varnerin 4 May 1888, having sailed from Hamburg, age 47.

In 1903 trip through Ellis Island it appears that he had been in the US in 1870 when he would have been about 28 years old.

June 1900 Census has the family at 283 Norfolk Avenue (later renumbered as 305). Says that he was born in 1840 and she in May 1860, which does not agree with their headstone. Son John is single, age 20, born January 1880 and another son born 1887. Says that they have three children. Parents came to the US in 1890. Children born in Italy.

31 May 1903 - Leonardo Ferroli arrived at Ellis Island, age 61, married, mason, of Udine, traveling to 283 Norfolk Ave., Boston. Prior trips in 1870 and 1901. On the same manifest were Pietro age 33 and his cousin Santo age 21 Facchin going to 297 Norfolk Avenue.

Leonardo Ferroli also arrived 3 September 1909, at age 66, returning to 305 Norfolk Avenue in Boston to his wife and two sons, John and Angelo. This is the house in which Anna Ferroli was living when she was married in 1899. Name was spelled Ferroli on both 1903 and 1909 manifests. Son Angelo has his name spelled with one R in 1914 at Ellis Island and the 1910 census has only one R.

April 1910 Census gives their address as 303, but this is probably a mistake, and says that Leonardo is 70 and Mary is 50, married for 35 years, had three children who are all living. Son John, age 30 and unmarried, and daughter Angela age 28 and unmarried living with them. This does not match other information unless “angela” is really Angelo or Anna; the ages do match for them to be the same person, and other information seems rather approximate or inaccurate also.

Angelo Ferroli, age 33, and his wife Maria, age 22, returning to 305 Norfolk Ave. arrived at Ellis Island on 22 May 1914.

January 1920 Census has Leonardo, age 80, a widower, as the owner of a house at 8 Humphreys Street, very close to where he was previously renting. Living with him are his son John, age 41, and John’s wife Mary, age 31, and a granddaughter, Mary L., and a grandson Arthur H. who is 6 months old. Leonardo’s other son Angelo is also living there with his wife Mary.
