FRANKLIN - Chris Mekkelsen, 74, of Duffy Street died Monday at home after a period of failing health. He was born in Barre Town, Barre, Vt., the son of Christian and Regina (Rugo) Mekkelsen. He lived in Laconia for many years before moving to Franklin, where he lived for 40 years. He served in the Army. Mekkelsen worked for Weeks Dairy in Laconia and Brezner Tannery in Penacook for 30 years before retiring. He later worked in the housekeeping department at Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen for 14 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 49 in Northfield. Survivors include three sons, Keven Mekkelsen of Franklin, David Mekkelsen of Belmont and Frank Mekkelsen of Maine; a daughter, Shirrelee Mekkelsen of Franklin; four sisters, Althea McLeod and Mildred Ladd, both of Barre Town, Barre, Vt., Mary Langevin of Barre City, Vt., and Frances Lane of Orange, Vt.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. His wife, Mary (Theranos) Mekkelsen, died in 1987; a daughter, Karen Mekkelsen, and two sisters, May Cenci and Agnes Walker, also died previously. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from noon to 2 p.m. at William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home, Franklin-Tilton Road, Tilton. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the memorial home. Burial will follow at Franklin Cemetery in Franklin. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 360 Route 101, Bedford 03110”
