NORTH BERWICK --James B. Miniuti, 67, of North Berwick, died on March 14, 2011 at York Hospital.
Born in Jersey City N.J., he was was a son of Fiorovanti O. And Beatrice ( Cousins) Miniutti. He attended local schools graduating from West Essex High School. Upon graduation he enlisted in the
United States Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam. He proudly served over 20 years with a colorful and memorable career, retiring in 1981 as a Gunnery Sergeant.
Following his service to his Country, Jim moved to Maine, living for a time in Arundle, settling in North Berwick.
'Sarge' began a 16 year career with the South Berwick Police Department, serving as a patrol officer for a time and as a Patrol Sergeant for many years. In his roll as the departments armoror and firearms instructor he imparted his knowledge of police work, especially his vast knowledge of firearms, not only to his department but to many young officers throughout the region as an instructor for the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.
His love of SCUBA diving not only allowed him to populate his own large saltwater fish tank with many species of underwater life, but it lured him to work closely with the Law Enforcement Dive Team for many years.
He was proud of his Native American, Mic- Mac roots, enjoying Native American dance and culture, never leaving his strong Italian heritage behind. He also enjoyed Asian culture, traditions, food and the study and practice of martial arts were an important part of his life. He was a great cook, especially those dishes that offered a little zing,and loved to share them. Jim was also devoted to his canine companions Nikki and Oliver.
Jim enjoyed membership in St. John Lodge #51 A.F. & A.M in South Berwick.
Jim will be long remembered for his gruff take charge outer exterior and dearly missed by those who knew and loved him for his kind heart and subdued gentleness and true example of friendship.
He is survived by his son Ryan Miniutti of Porter, daughter Allyson and her husband Kenneth Ray of Cumberland and son Jack and his wife Danielle Miniutti of Saco; grandchildren, Miranda, Jonathan, Matthew, Hannah and Emma Ray, Tristan, Brooke, Courtney and Adrianna Miniutti; a brother John and his wife Janet Miniutt of Marco Island Fla., brother William Miniutti of Ft. Jacksonville, Fla.; and a special aunt Angela Miniutti and her family of Watereboro.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday March 20, 2011 at 4 p.m. in the Ramsdell Rogers American Legion Banquet Center at 9 Hannaford Drive in York, with a time of refreshment and sharing to follow til 6 p.m. At his families request please wear casual attire. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home.
