Dr. William Monafo passed away in his home on July 4 th , 2003, after a valiant fight with cancer. The lesion and its therapy kept him from the only meeting of the John A. Boswick, M.D Burn & Wound Healing Symposium he ever missed, last year. He was a dear friend and mentor to many of us dedicated to the treatment of the burn patient. Indeed, he was a pioneer among those who created and innovated new treatments to help major burn victims survive. Most notably, he will be remembered for Cerium-Silver Sulfadiazine. But he also investigated hypertonic fluid resuscitation, Silver Nitrate Solution, and other topical agents to prevent sepsis and promote the healing of burn wounds.
His dry humor and sometimes pointed, but gentle, comments enriched many “ho-hum” scientific presentations. His leadership as President of the American Burn Association in 1977 helped forged the path to growth and expanded membership within the allied medical fields, fire-fighters, and basic science researchers.
Dr. Monafo was born and raised in Boston, MA, and educated at Harvard College (1953) and Tufts Medical School (1957). His surgical residency was at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, under the tutelage of Dr. Carl Moyer. He was named Chief of Surgery at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in 1966, where he established a burn center. In 1979 Dr. Monafo returned to Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University School of Medicine as professor of surgery and director of the Barnes Hospital Burn Center. He retired in 1996.
For more than 30 years Bill served on the Shriners Hospital Medical Advisory Board, and was its chairman from 1986 to 1992.
Boston Globe obituary:
DR. WILLIAM MONAFO , 71; HELPED ADVANCE BURN TREATMENT
Author: By Martha Bartle, Globe Correspondent Date: 07/07/2003 Page: C12 Section: Obituary
Dr. William Monafo , a pioneer in burn care who helped introduce the first effective topical antibacterial treatment for burns, died on July 4 at his home in St. Louis. He was 71.
"All he ever wanted to do was help people in their time of need, and he had a real sense of pride in doing that," said his son, Jim of St. Louis.
A native of Boston, Dr. Monafo graduated in 1969 from the Boston Latin School, where he played fullback on the varsity football team.
Dr. Monafo graduated from Harvard in 1953 and Tufts Medical School in 1957. He completed his surgical training and residency at Washington University in St. Louis, and later became chief of surgery at St. John's Medical Center in St. Louis.
At St. John's, Dr. Monafo established the hospital's first burn unit, which soon rose to national prominence. Despite his professional commitments, however, Dr. Monafo found ample time to spend with his three children, according to his son.
"I can't remember a single game of mine that my father didn't come to," his son said. "Whatever he didn't have time to do, he made time and did it."
In his career, Dr. Monafo was especially dedicated to children and was involved with the Shriners Hospital for Children for more than 30 years. His son recalled several of his father's patients who kept in touch with him all their lives. He said that one of his favorite photographs of his father showed him and a former patient at her wedding.
The enthusiasm he felt for the healing of his patients stretched over to the care and concern he devoted to his family.
His son recalled a time a few years ago when Dr. Monafo's 2-year-old grandson tripped and cut his head on a wall while the family was sitting down to dinner.
"My wife was freaking out," the son said, "but my dad just took charge, and it was amazing to see how everyone was calmed by the look on his face and how he just took charge."
Dr. Monafo was a football and baseball fan and loved taking long walks with his wife and family after his retirement.
In addition to his son and grandchildren, Dr. Monafo leaves his wife, Jamie (McClearn) of St. Louis; another son, Dr. William J. of Townsend; a daughter, Katherine A. Kennon of New Knoxville, Ohio; three sisters, Marie Forcucci of Marshfield, Dr. Virginia Canti of Milan, Italy, and Janet Rahilly of Lexington.
A Mass will be said Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Anselm Church in St. Louis, Missouri.
