MILTON -- Joseph F. Rugo Jr., 85, a general contractor and former owner of the Boston Braves, died yesterday in the Hollywell Nursing Home in Randolph after a long illness.
Born in Boston, Mr. Rugo was a 1917 graduate of the old Commerce High School. He was a 40-year resident of Milton.
In 1929, Mr. Rugo founded the Joseph Rugo Inc. General Contractors of Boston. His firm constructed the Boston University Sports Center, the University of Massachusetts School of Education in Amherst, the Eastern Airlines Hanger and the North Terminal, both at Logan International Airport and Lakeville Hospital.
In 1946, Mr. Rugo became a part owner of the Boston Braves baseball team until 1953 when the team was sold and moved to Milwaukee.
He was a member of the Emmanuel College board of directors and was named a Knight of Malta by the late Cardinal Spellman of New York. He was also a member of the Italian Charitable Society.
He leaves a son, Joseph F. Rugo 3d of Centerville, and four grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be said Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Hills Church, Milton. Burial will be in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline.
Boston Globe December 24,1980 Re: Government Center Garage: “ The garage, which contains 1895 parking spaces, was built 10 years ago by the now-defunct Joseph Rugo Construction Co. of Dorchester.” Dec. 9th “The city sued the company for delays and defects in the project and was awarded slightly over $500,000, according to one official.”
