Notes for Maria Maddelena Bidoli
Ellis Island records show Maria, age 29, and son Guido, entering the US on April 29, 1899 with Lorenzo Varnerin, age 44, who was returning to Boston.
Although their last names are recorded as Varnerin, the ages are right for Rugo and the 1900 Census says that they arrived in 1899. In the same group were her sister, Santa Bidoli Ferroli, age 27, and daughter Maria, age 6 months, who were making their first trip to the US to join her husband Giovanni Battista Ferroli in Boston. All were going to 297 (later 321) Norfolk Avenue. They had sailed on the St. Louis from Cherbourg, France.

Emilia was first child born in Boston on Feb. 22, 1900. Emilia’s granddaughter, Maryanne Tirinnanzi, says of the death of Maria, “I know the story of the death because my grandmother told me several times...and how the doctor sent her to the drugstore to get medicine, but she bled to death by the time she came back. The baby died too. It was 1914 because my grandmother told me that she had to quit school to help care for the younger children.
